Job Description
SUMMARY
This position is responsible for the operational oversight in the production and warehouse departments for 1st shift as it pertains to the supervision of processes and people. Responsibility includes staffing, production processes, materials management and meeting customer service needs.
CONNECTION TO MISSION
The Production Superintendent has a direct impact on the manufacturing of a safe, quality product while meeting demands and offering customer satisfaction for both internal and external customers. This manager will support all safety programs, policies and procedures that support Food Safety, Personal Safety, Product Quality and Tonnage goals. Additionally they will have a personal value system that will assist in creating a work environment that is based on trust, human dignity, and honesty, which in turn will contribute to a high quality of life for all employees.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:
Human Resources
- Hire, mentor, and supervise training for coach staff. Hold weekly staff meetings; establish department objectives, policies, procedures, performance standards, and schedules for staff.
- Work with People Department and Corporate Training Department to identify, develop, and initiate training programs for staff.
- Assure that coaches maintain the highest level of technical/process competency and initiative to assure benchmark level performance.
- Staff and schedule departments to minimize overtime and maximize efficiencies.
- Treat co-workers fairly, consistently and with respect.
- Initiate and/or continue the flow of paperwork in a responsible and timely fashion; disciplinary warnings, employee warning reports, evaluations, etc.
Programs and Activities
- Supervise and/or oversee daily production
- Provide leadership and feedback to coaches to assure smooth transition into 2nd shift, throughout the day and when shutting down at the end of the day
- Assure coordination of support services as necessary; maintenance, material management, FSSI, etc. to assure a smooth transition into and during 2nd shift
- Assure proper and efficient hand off of the plant/operations to night sanitation.
- Act as facility liaison with night sanitation service
- Participate in weekly PRP and USDA meetings
- Identify and schedule special cleaning projects
- Act as a leader, trainer, manager, and representative for all production and production related departments on 2nd shift
- Develop direct reports through training in the following areas:
i. Process specific training – including equipment and processes
i. People management skills – including training, attendance program, coaching and training, etc.
ii. Production performance evaluation, data collection, and review
iii. Ongoing process improvement philosophy
iv. Food Safety, Personal Safety, and Quality Control
- Organize and direct job tasks for 2nd shift production employees
i. Work with direct reports to establish production line crew sizing that
maximizes capacity and efficiency on a continual basis
ii. Establish goals and objectives for direct reports on a continual basis
- Direct responsibility to build systems that assure maximum production performance in the following categories through clear communication with maintenance, sanitation, and production personnel. (what systems do they need to develop and/or systems already built)
- Inedible and rework reduction
- Process efficiency
- Overtime
- Product quality
- Overfill
- Uptime
- Provide employee management, including but not limited to new hire training, development, discipline, absenteeism, and managing overtime.
- Obtain knowledge or complete training to educate self on HACCP, CCP’s, SSOP’s, and GMP’s. Participate in the development of said programs.
- Work closely with production support services, including Maintenance, Material management, FSSI, Human Resources, Scheduling and Cost Accounting as it pertains to the development and support of production activities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly manage 2nd shift coaches in the areas of production and materials management. Carry out management responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
